Wreck closes 15th Street Thursday

Two blocks of Fifteenth Street have been closed to traffic after a vehicle involved in a collision hit a utility pole Thursday afternoon.

The roadway was cleared from Washington Plaza to Pierce Street. A utility crew was immediately called to the scene and the road will remain closed until the pole has been replaced, a process that could take hours, said Lt. William Chrismon, spokesman for the Washington Police Department.

“The only thing holding this light pole up is a little guide wire. If it comes up, this all goes down,” Chrismon reported at the scene.

One person was injured in the 4 p.m. wreck and taken to Vidant Beaufort Hospital. The name and extent of injuries has not yet been released.
