On Nov. 10, members of the Kiwanis Club of Washington will put on the gloves and put the pot on to boil as their cash crop of the year comes in for the 29th consecutive season: lobsters.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., lovers of the big crustaceans can pick them up from 629 W. 15th Street, Washington. The Maine lobsters will weigh in between 1 1/4 lbs. and 1 1/2 lbs and sell for $16 each.
The lobster sale is the Kiwanis main fundraiser of the year, said Marcian Bouchard, Kiwanis Club member, and allows the organization to give several thousand dollars in scholarships to local college-bound students each year. In 2012, those scholarships totaled $5,000, but Bouchard cites the economy as the reason why it’s getting harder and harder to hit a “home run” with any kind of fundraiser. Still, he said, selling 600 to 800 hard-to-find fresh lobsters to the general public is well worth it.
And lobster ticket holders can either take them live or have them cooked by the local Kiwanis.
“We boil the little critters,” Bouchard said. “The day of the event, we offer them either live or we’ll cook them for you. We’re actually out there the day of the event with butane stoves and lobster pots, cooking away.”
