Walk for Hunger set for Oct. 14Published 9:49pm Wednesday, October 10, 2012
The Food Bank of the Albemarle will host the 29th annual Walk for Hunger on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Charles Creek Park in Elizabeth City. According to a press release from the food bank, the organization is asking community members to organize teams and raise money to fight hunger in the region. Teams can register online at www.afoodbank.org.
Those who would like to participate, but do not live in the Elizabeth City vicinity can participate as a virtual walker, said the release. Information about becoming a virtual walker is also located on the website.
Those walking for hunger will take a 4.1-mile walk through surrounding neighborhoods and end back at Charles Creek Park. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. on the day of the walk; the walk officially starts at 2 p.m.
The Walk for Hunger is the Food Bank’s largest fundraiser and relies on the generosity, enthusiasm and participation of local communities, churches, businesses, organizations and individuals to help raise the money needed to fight hunger in northeast North Carolina, according to the press release. For every dollar raised by the walkers and their sponsors, the Food Bank of the Albemarle can provide five pounds of food, or the equivalent of four meals, to neighbors in need.
