Marijuana, shotgun lead to arrestPublished 9:46pm Tuesday, March 12, 2013
A firearm forgotten in the back of a vehicle added a charge on top of drug charges for one Beaufort County man.
Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Drug Unit arrested Andrew Mason Jarvis, 19, of Highway 92 East, last week. According to a press release it was when the drug unit stopped Jarvis’ vehicle shortly after it left the Beaufort County Community College campus that investigators smelled marijuana in the vehicle. A search turned up 15 grams of marijuana, a marijuana smoking pipe and a loaded 12-guage shotgun, said the release.
“Jarvis had forgotten it was back there — he just had it in the car and didn’t think about it,” a spokesman for the drug unit said, adding that that sometimes happens when people drive the same vehicle to school and to hunt. “There wasn’t anything malicious about it.”
However, a firearm on campus is illegal, and Jarvis was charged with possession of a firearm on education property in addition to possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Jarvis was confined in the Beaufort County jail under a $1,500 secured bond.
