Pirates to play in NCAA Tournament

GREENVILLE -- East Carolina's quest for a trip to Omaha in 2003 got new life on Monday as the Pirates were awarded an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

East Carolina (33-25-1) will be the No. 3 seed in the Atlanta Regional, hosted by Georgia Tech (44-16). The Pirates will face No. 2 seed South Carolina (39-20) on Friday at 3 p.m. The regional's No. 4 seed is Stetson (39-22), which will face the host Yellow Jackets on Friday night at 7 p.m.

The double-elimination regional will be held at Tech's Russ Chandler Stadium. Saturday's game times are 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m. Sunday's championship game is slated for 1 p.m. with a second game, if necessary, to follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.


Tournament books, including tickets for all seven sessions, are priced at $84 for a reserved chairback seat and $70 for a reserved bench seat between first and third base. Tournament books are available immediately through the ECU ticket office and can be ordered by calling 1-800-DIAL ECU (inside N.C. only) or (252) 328-4500.

ECU will continue to take tournament ticket orders through Wednesday at 3 p.m.

Single-game tickets are not available through ECU.

The Pirates will be making their fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and their 19th overall appearance.

The winner of the NCAA Atlanta Regional advances to one of eight NCAA Super Regionals, scheduled for June 6-8 on campus sites.

Saturday, May 31

Game 3, Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2, 11 a.m.

Game 4, Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game, 3 p.m.

Game 5, Winner Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4, 7 p.m.

Sunday, June 1

Game 6, Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5 (first possible championship game), 1

p.m.

Game 7, Same teams, if necessary, 45 minutes after Game 6
