There was a little something extra in the steps of the Washington soccer team Wednesday evening.
It was "Senior Night" and the Pam Pack used the excitement in the air to move on to a 4-0 win over Kinston in Eastern Carolina Conference play.
"I think that played a role in it," said Washington head coach Ben Brand. "We played really well. This was a great game for us, and it was special for them. I definitely think it helped out with the way they played."
At halftime, the Washington crowd said good-bye to Elizabeth Jarvis, Kristen Whitehead, Sarah Allen, Jeanne Lee and Lauren Alligood.
The seniors got to leave on a winning note.
Only eight minutes into the game, Jarvis found Allen on a crossing pass leading to the first goal.
Allen scored again later in the first half. This time she was assisted by Cameron Whitehead. Washington added one more goal before halftime as Kendall Cox bulled through the defense for a goal. Allen picked up the assist on the play.
The scoring was capped when Misty Anglim let a shot rip from 30 yards out into the back of the net. Minutes later the seniors left the field to a standing ovation from the home crowd.
Late in the game, Washington's Alexandra Speros caught a throw-in with her shirt and took off toward the Kinston goal. It was a novel idea, but the referee didn't think so. A prompt whistle ended Speros' charge to the goal, and Kinston ended up with a free kick going the other way.
"(The idea) started last year," Speros said. "We thought about it, and joked about it. We wondered what could be called. We didn't think it could be a hand ball or a high kick. We decided we would try it, so we practiced it on the sideline (tonight), and we did it. We got called right away, but it was the most fun."
After the play, the side referee reached into his pocket as if to pull out a card, but he changed his mind. He later told Brand the play might be considered taunting in a 4-0 game like the one last night.
After the game, each senior had something to say about her time at Washington High School and on the soccer field.
"I really enjoyed playing soccer with all my teammates," Kristen Whitehead said. "Coach Brand is a wonderful coach, and I'll miss playing with them all next year."
"Soccer has been the best part of my high school experience," Alligood said. "Coach Brand made it a lot of fun."
"Soccer is the only thing I'm going to miss about high school," Lee said. "Oh, and my friends, too."
"I've really enjoyed playing soccer for the past four years," Jarvis said. "I love the spirit of unity on our team, and we have a great coach."
"I love these girls, and I've enjoyed the past four years with them." Allen said. "Coach Brand is the best."
To which Lee added, "I love coach Brand, too."
The win moved Washington into second place in the ECC with a 9-2 record. The Pam Pack is 13-5-1 overall.
The junior varsity team picked up a win Wednesday as well. Kati Howdy had two goals and Janna Cordon scored once in Washington's 3-0 win over the Kinston JV team. The Washington JV team has a record of 6-2 with six shutouts.
Washington travels to Edenton today for a non-conference game. Last time out, Edenton defeated Washington at home.
"They did beat us last time," Brand said. "They do know it's not a conference game, but we are on some kind of a streak right now. I'd just like to keep is going, and I hope (the players) do, too."
