Kellum, Copper and Carey
Commentary by KEVIN TRAVIS, Sports Editor
While most people were eating turkey, the Southside Seahawks spent part of their Thanksgiving on the practice field.
That’s just fine with them. That means their goose, ahem, hasn’t been cooked yet. Instead, the Seahawks are hoping to reach their third state championship game in four years.
What DeWayne Kellum has done with this program is nothing short of special. In seven years, Kellum has built Southside into one of the most feared football teams in the state.
There were some growing pains in the first three seasons. The Seahawks went 3-7 in their inaugural season in 1999, followed by 3-8 records the next two years.
By the fourth season, Kellum has the Seahawks playing for a state championship. While Southside lost 30-6 to Elkin in the Class 1-A title game, it was a sign of things to come. The Seahawks went on to win three consecutive conference championships, while also winning the East Regional title last year.
Southside lost 16-14 to Swain County in last season’s title game.
Kellum has quickly turned the Seahawks into a championship contender. The Southside coach, who was named head coach at Chocowinity in 1985, has 133 wins to his credit.
Kellum is 57-31 at Southside, including an astounding 48-8 mark in the past four years. Even more impressive is the team’s 26-1 record in the last two years.
Two more wins, and Kellum will be playing for another state championship. Let’s hope it will be seventh heaven for Kellum and the Seahawks in their seventh year of existence.
Copper’s catch
Former Washington Pam Pack standout Terrance Copper, a wide receiver with the Dallas Cowboys, had one catch for five yards in Thursday’s 24-21 overtime loss to the Denver Broncos.
The catch came on a quick hitter from Drew Bledsoe on second-and-four, which gave the Cowboys a first down. Dallas went on to score on the drive.
It was Copper’s first catch of the season, and his first in 16 games. His previous reception came in Week 12 of last season, when he grabbed two passes for 15 yards, including his lone NFL touchdown, in a win over the Seattle Seahawks.
Copper also had one tackle, which gives him 10 on the season. He’s second in the team in special teams tackles.
He also has two kickoff returns for 32 yards, a 16.0 average.
Carey’s crooning
Just when I thought I was in the middle of a tryptophan-coma, I realized I was actually watching Mariah Carey belt out some “beautiful” tunes during the Falcons-Lions game.
A combination of an abundance of mom’s turkey, stuffing and sweet potatoes along with Carey’s singing caused me to put on a pot of coffee before heading into work.
I wonder how long it took her posse to fit Carey into that body-hugging outfit. Not that I’m complaining.
It just gave me one more reason to be thankful.
