SWAN QUARTER — Sharon G. Sadler, a veteran courthouse employee, wants to keep her job as clerk of Hyde County Superior Court.

She was appointed on July 1, 1976 to serve as deputy clerk under former Clerk of Court W. Allen Credle. Sadler was appointed clerk of court when former Clerk of Court Lenora S. Bright retired June 30, 2002. Sadler was elected to serve as clerk in November of 2002.

“The vote of confidence extended to me by those I serve means so much, and it is on this note that I renew my pledge to continue to serve you with dedication and trust that is deserved and expected,” Sadler said. “My staff and I are available to serve you at our office, 10 miles east of Swan Quarter in the New Holland community, until such time that the judicial facilities are completed at the new government complex.”

Sadler said the clerk’s office performs many functions.

“The office of clerk of Superior Court is both a judicial and administrative office. The clerk of Superior Court is an ex-officio judge of probate, holds exclusive original jurisdiction in matters relating to probate of wills and estate administrations of decedents, guardianships, minor and in competency matters. The clerk also has the responsibility of hearing matters such as adoptions, foreclosures, and condemnations of private lands for public use,” Sadler said. “The responsibility of being the official record keeper for the District and Superior courts rests in this office. This office handled in excess of 1,800 case filings in 2005. The duties of the clerk’s office are numerous and varied, and with a small staff of five, counting the clerk, everyone is cross-trained so that the office can serve the citizens in the most efficient capacity.”

Throughout the years, lack of personnel has been a big challenge for the clerk’s office, Sadler said. For the first time in 30 years, a new position has been assigned to the office by the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts.

In January, Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake appointed Sadler to serve on the North Carolina Rural Courts Commission, which works to make sure that court system services are being delivered in an effective and efficient manner to rural counties.

Engelhard resident Carolyn Williford supports Sadler.

“Sharon Sadler is friendly and always willing to help when you enter the clerk’s office. I have known her for many years. Her years of experience in this office have given her a good understanding of what to do (in) this important job. She uses this experience to better serve Hyde County,” Williford said.

Ray Spencer also believes that Sadler is doing a good job.

“Having no opposition speaks a lot about the work that she has done over the past four years. She has done a good job, and she’s doing what she needs to do for the people and has a Christian lady, and a beautiful lady inside and out. I support her all the way,” he said.

Sadler is married to Reid Sadler, a farmer. The Sadlers have two daughters. Andrea is a senior at East Carolina University. April is a senior at Pungo Christian Academy. The family attends Swan Quarter Christian Church. Sadler is a member of the Greater Hyde County Chamber of Commerce, Swan Quarter Service Group and Executive Committee of the Southern Albemarle Association.
