Washington’s Ward, Daniels looking for success

They both have their personal events, but then they team up on the 4x100-meter relay team.
Whether they’re running alone or side by side, Washington Shawn Ward and Travis Daniels are looking to come home from Saturday’s North Carolina class 3-A East Regional track meet with some spoils.
On the singles’ side of things, Ward competes in the 100-meter dash. His best time so far this season is 11.3 seconds, but he wants to go faster Saturday.
“Really, I just want to run as hard as I can and don’t come in last,” Ward said. “Actually, I’m hoping to better my (personal best). I want to get into the 10s really.”
His sprint-style speed is something Washington track us just now taking advantage of.
“This year, my goals really changed,” Ward said. “I didn’t really come in being a 100 guy, but coach (Jon Blank) wanted me to try something new. I tried it, and was pretty good at it, so that’s what I’ve been doing.”
Until now, Ward used is speed on the grass.
“I play cornerback, and I don’t really get burned. I can catch up to anybody,” he said.
Daniels says his best chance at success comes in the long jump. This season, he’s leapt 21.5 feet, and he wants to reach a distance of 22 feet Saturday.
“It feels good,” Daniels said of making it to the regional meet. “It’s like all the hard work is showing. I’d really like to qualify for states in the long jump.”
