Former Northside star Wilson to join Longwood Lancers

YEATESVILLE — After two successful seasons playing for the Louisburg Hurricanes, former Northside standout Daniel Wilson continues his basketball career — this time at the Division I level.

“I went there, and learned the fundamentals,” Wilson said of his time at Louisburg College. “I went there, and I did what I had to do. My No. 1 accomplishment there was graduating.”

Wilson has signed to play basketball for the Longwood University Lancers. Currently, the Lancers are counting down to when the university officially joins the Division I ranks.

Wilson will be right along with them when the time comes 14 months from now. Longwood is in its third year of a four-year reclassification process.

“I’m real excited, and I thank God,” Wilson said of the opportunity to play at Longwood. “I can’t leave Him out. He gave me the perseverance I needed. At one point in time, I didn’t think it was going to work out (playing for a Division I school). All the colleges I thought I was going to just went with other guys. But, in the end, God really came through for me, and I’m very excited about going there.”

The Lancers graduated only one senior from last year’s squad, and return the bulk of a 10-20 team.

“They’ve got some really good guys on the team,” Wilson said. “One guy, Maurice (Sumter), he is a scorer. And another guy (Michael Jefferson) scored like 30 points against Illinois (in December of 2004).”

Both Sumter and Jefferson will be seniors when Wilson joins the team in the fall.

“I went up there and met them, and they seem like really nice guys,” Wilson said. “I haven’t really met the rest of the team, but I’ve been reading about them and what-not.”

Wilson stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs in at 230 pounds. He will be one of the biggest players on the Longwood roster.

The Lancers will play in North Carolina several times next season. According to Wilson, the team will travel to take on High Point University and North Carolina A&T.
