Six area players were recognized for their sensational seasons, as the 2006 North Carolina Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association All-State teams were released Friday.
Washington's Meredith Knox and Charity Watson were named to the Class 3-A All-State team, while Taylor Rogers received honorable mention.
Jamesville's Nicole Jordan and Elizabeth Ange were named to the 1-A All-State team, while Brittany Ange earned honorable mention.
A committee, which met Wednesday, selected the All-State players based on the nominations sent in by head softball coaches throughout the state.
Knox, voted the Daily News' Female Athlete of the Year for the second straight year, was named to the first team on the WDN All-Area Softball Team. The shortstop led the Washington Pam Pack with a .386 batting average, two home runs and 21 RBIs. She collected six doubles and four triples, while not making an error defensively all season.
It was Knox’s third all-area softball selection. She was voted to the first team as a sophomore and to the second team as a freshman.
Knox, who graduated from Washington last Saturday, will continue her academic and athletic career at Anderson University in the fall.
Watson had a spectacular freshman season for the Pam Pack. She finished the year with a 21-3 mark, leading the Pam Pack (22-3) to the second round of the NCHSAA Class 3-A state playoffs. Watson allowed just eight earned runs on 44 hits in 178 2/3 innings, racking up 384 strikeouts and a miniscule 0.40 ERA.
Voted the WDN Softball Pitcher of the Year, Watson threw seven no-hitters, which included two perfect games. The rising sophomore was named Washington's MVP in softball.
Rogers, a rising senior, was named to the first team on the WDN All-Area Softball Team. She hit .306 with nine RBIs. Rogers was outstanding behind the plate, combining with Watson on 17 shutouts. She also threw out or picked off over a dozen base runners throughout the season.
Rogers has been named to three all-area teams. She was a second-team selection as a designated hitter last year with Washington after being voted first-team outfielder while at Jamesville her freshman season.
Jordan, a Jamesville graduate, was named to the first team on the WDN All-Area Softball Team. She hit .505 and drove in 32 runs her senior year, helping Jamesville win the East Regional championship.
Jordan, an all-area second team selection last year, will continue her academic and athletic career at Pitt Community College in the fall.
Elizabeth Ange finished with an 11-4 mark and 48 strikeouts as a freshman, while being named to the second team on the WDN All-Area Softball Team. She was the winning pitcher in each of Jamesville's playoff victories, including the East Regional championship game. The rising sophomore also hit .550 as the leadoff batter.
Brittany Ange, a rising senior, was also named to the second team on the all-area softball team. She hit .410 and drove in a team-high 37 runs.
