Pam Pack tops Rams after week long layoff

After having to wait a week to return to action because of tropical storm Ernesto, the Washington tennis team took to the courts on Thursday without missing a beat. The Pam Pack netters shutdown Havelock in an 9-0 romp over the Rams, improving their record to 3-0.
Washington tennis coach Diane Cuffie said she was proud of the way her team showed up to play after the long delay.
“The girls adjusted well to the layoff,” Cuffie said. “They haven’t practiced or played for the last seven days because of the weather. Havelock gave us a good game today; we were fortunate to play well against them.”
The Pam Pack received strong performances from its one seed down to its sixth. Washington’s top seed Rachel Perkinson took a 6-3, 6-0 win over Leilan Neder, McKenna Cox (#2) slammed Sammi Deal 6-0, 6-1, Maddy Young (#3) breezed by Nevea Pratt 6-1, 6-0, Kati Howdy (#4) rolled over Joi Mobley 6-1,6-0, Miranda Whitley (#5) dashed past Rashelle Preatt 6-3, 6-4, while Brooke Burnette blasted Diane Hunter 6-1, 6-3.
Cuffie said she felt Washington put in a good team effort Thursday.
“I was impressed with our one seed,” Cuffie said. “She settled down after a slow start and got back on top of her game. McKenna Cox was impressive all the way through. Maddy was impressive too, but I was really impressed with Kati. She breezed through her match today after struggling through her first two matches of the year.
“Miranda Whitley didn’t play the first week of the season, but she came on today and play very well. Brooke Burnette closed out the day for us with a strong 6-1, 6-3 win.”
Washington’s torrid tennis play carried over into doubles action as well. Perkinson and Cox teamed up to top Neder and Deal 8-1, Young and Whitley combined to beat Pratt and Mobley 7-2, while Thuy Nguyen and Burnette beat Rashelle Pratt and Hunter 8-0.
“Our doubles play was pretty good too,” Cuffie said. “What can I say? The scores were good, the program is in place and we have good seniors here to lead us.”
Though the Pam Pack won 9-0, it seemed to lack intensity at times during Thursday’s match. Cuffie said that the team was just happy to be playing after the long layoff.
“I try an impress upon them that you can’t take any one for granted,” Cuffie said. “I think everybody was just happy to get back into the sport. We haven’t been able to play in a while I think everyone was just happy to be back out here.”
The Pam Pack will look to extend its three match winning streak on Tuesday as it hosts West Carteret.
