Freshman runs well at regional meet

Gina Valenti had a solid showing in her first ever NCAA Division II Southeast regional meet.
The former Washington Pam Pack standout, a freshman for the Lees-McRae Bobcats, finished 33rd in 25 minutes, 35 seconds in Saturday’s race. The regional meet, a 3.72-mile race, was held at Wingate College.
She was the second Bobcat to cross the finish line. Her efforts helped lead Lees-McRae to a sixth-place finish.
Copper gets the start
Terrance Copper had one catch and one rush for the New Orleans Saints in Sunday’s 31-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The former Washington High School standout, who started the game in place of the injured Joe Horn, had one catch for 11 yards. He also had one rush for 8 yards and one tackle.
For the season, Copper has four receptions for 66 yards. He also has one rush for 8 yards, four kickoff returns for 79 yards (19.8 average) and four tackles.
In his three-year career, Copper has 12 catches for 155 yards and a touchdown. He also has two rushes for 7 yards, 22 kickoff returns for 418 yards (19.0 average) and 28 tackles.
The Saints (6-2) play at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.
Jackson scores in key Vikings’ win
Marvin Jackson hauled in a long touchdown pass to help Elizabeth City State University beat Virginia Union 29-21 on Saturday.
The win gave the Vikings (9-1, 7-0) the CIAA Eastern Division crown.
Jackson’s touchdown grab went for 60 yards. He hauled in five passes for 102 yards to go with the score.
The former Plymouth High School star has a team-high 44 receptions for 668 yards (15.2 average) and six touchdowns.
The Vikings, which set a school record for wins, will play North Carolina Central for the CIAA championship in Durham on Saturday.
Roach throws TD in win
Brad Roach threw what proved to be the game-winning touchdown for Catawba in Saturday’s 21-14 win over Presbyterian.
The former Williamston High School star hit Brent Johnson with a 6-yard toss in the third quarter for the winning points.
Roach was 7-of-21 for 55 yards and two interceptions to go with the touchdown. He also ran four times for minus-5 yards.
For the season, Roach is 166-of-310 (53.5 percent) for 2,026 yards to go with 13 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He’s also run for 7 yards and a touchdown.
The Indians (5-4, 2-4 SAC) play at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday.
Linson snags three passes
Damien Linson caught three passes for 25 yards in Central Michigan’s 42-26 win over Temple on Saturday.
The former Plymouth High School standout also had one punt return for six yards and two kickoff returns for three yards.
For the season, Linson has 38 receptions for 458 yards (12.1 average) and three scores. He also has four rushes for 8 yards, 20 punt returns for 131 yards (6.6 average) and three kickoff returns for 6 yards.
The Chippewas (6-3) play host to Western Michigan on Friday.
Haywood scores twice in win
Bryan Haywood scored a pair of touchdowns for North Carolina Wesleyan ins Saturday’s 55-14 win over Ferrum.
The former Southside High School standout scored on runs on 14 and 8 yards.
Haywood ran for 82 yards on six carries. He also had one reception for 7 yards.
For the season, Haywood has 475 yards and eight scores on 72 carries. He also has 15 catches for 122 yards and a score. Haywood also has one kickoff return for 13 yards.
Wesleyan (5-4, 4-2 USA South) plays host to Greensboro College on Saturday.
Whitney gets interception
Davelle Whitney celebrated his birthday in style on Saturday.
The former Southside High School star had an interception in North Carolina Wesleyan’s 55-14 win over Ferrum. It was the first interception of the season for Whitney.
Whitney also had one tackle. He now has six on the season.
