Coffield named MVP of hoops tournament

Elton Coffield was named the Most Valuable Player of the 41st Annual Pickle Classic.
The former Williamston High School star poured in 20.5 points in the tournament, helping to lead Mount Olive College to the championship. It was the second time in three years that Coffield was named MVP of the tournament.
The senior for the Trojans had 14 points and six rebounds in the championship game as Mount Olive took a 79-70 win over Chowan. He also had two steals to go with a block and an assist.
In Friday’s semifinal game, Coffield poured in 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 101-94 victory over Ohio Valley. It was the first double-double of his career. Coffield had two assists as well.
The Trojans open Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference play Tuesday Pfeiffer.
Copper scores second
touchdown
Terrance Copper, a former standout at Washington High School, had his second touchdown in as many games for the New Orleans Saints in Sunday’s 31-16 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The touchdown grab went for 27 yards in the fourth quarter. Copper finished with six catches for 87 yards. The receptions matched a career high as Copper had six catches for 92 yards and a touchdown a week earlier.
The third-year receiver also lost a fumble after a catch in the first half.
For the season, Copper has 16 receptions for 245 yards and two touchdowns. He also has one rush for 8 yards, four kickoff returns for 79 yards (19.8 average), five tackles and one fumble recovery.
In his three-year career, Copper has 24 catches for 334 yards and three touchdowns. He also has two rushes for 7 yards, 22 kickoff returns for 418 yards (19.0 average) and 29 tackles.
The Saints (6-4) play at the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
Wilkins averaging 6.8 points
Damien Wilkins is averaging 6.8 points and 3.0 rebounds per game for the Seattle SuperSonics.
The Washington native scored 8 points in Seattle’s 107-95 loss to Golden State on Saturday. Wilkins, who hit 4 of 8 from the field, had three rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block.
Seattle (4-7) plays host to the New Jersey Nets tonight.
Linson has three
catches in loss
Former Plymouth High School standout Damien Linson had three catches for 37 yards in Central Michigan’s 31-10 loss to Northern Illinois on Friday night.
The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Chippewas, who are the Mid-American Conference West champions
Linson also had one punt return and he lost a yard on the return.
For the season, Linson has 44 catches for 563 yards and four touchdowns. He also has 21 punt returns for 130 yards, six rushes for 14 yards and three kickoff returns for six yards.
Central Michigan (7-4, 6-1) closes out regular-season play Friday at Buffalo. The Chippewas will play in the MAC Championship game Nov. 30 in Detroit. The game will be televised on ESPN.
Jackson has five receptions
Former Plymouth High School standout Marvin Jackson led Elizabeth City State University with five catches for 53 yards in Saturday’s 17-10 loss to Delta State in the first round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Jackson led the Vikings with 54 receptions and 760 receiving yards this season. He also had six touchdown catches.
The Vikings finished with a 9-3 record.
C.J. Wilson takes down two
Former Northside High School star C.J. Wilson had two tackles for East Carolina in Saturday’s 18-17 loss to Rice.
One of the tackles went for a loss.
Wilson has 26 tackles, including five for a loss and three quarterback sacks, this season. The freshman defensive end also has four quarterback hurries.
The Pirates (6-5, 5-3 Conference USA) end regular season play Saturday at N.C. State.
Jacob Wilson has two tackles
Former Northside High School standout Jacob Wilson recorded two tackles for Western Carolina in Saturday’s 62-0 loss to the No. 3 Florida Gators.
One of the tackles went for a loss.
Wilson finished the season with five tackles.
The Catamounts ended the season with a 2-9 record.
Midgette starting at Pembroke
Former Southside High School star Sharkeyha Midgette has been starting for the UNC-Pembroke Braves’ basketball team.
Midgette played 17 minutes and was scoreless in Saturday’s 58-37 loss to Edinboro. She had three rebounds while missing both of her field goal attempts.
A day earlier, the senior had 2 points and nine rebounds in a 56-43 loss to Millersville. She had two steals and one assist.
Midgette had 2 points, four rebounds and a steal in a 71-61 season-opening loss to Mount Olive.
The Braves (0-3) play host to North Carolina Central on Saturday.
Danny Wilson playing with Lancers
Former Northside High School standout Danny Wilson has played in four games for the Longwood Lancers.
Wilson is averaging 2.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.
Wilson, a 6-8 junior center, played six minutes and didn’t score in Longwood’s 74-60 loss to George Washington on Friday.
The Lancers (2-2) play at Richmond tonight.
Johnson, Sasnett see action
Former Pungo Christian Academy star Hunter Johnson and former Northside High School standout Candice Sasnett saw action for Meredith College in Saturday’s season-opening 87-45 loss to Southwestern University.
Johnson played five minutes and hit the only shot she took, finishing with 2 points and two rebounds.
Sasnett logged six minutes and finished with 4 points. She was 1 of 3 from the field and 2 of 3 at the foul line. Sasnett also had four rebounds and one steal.
The Angels play at Methodist College on Tuesday.
