The Pamlico-Tar River Foundation will receive a $20,000 grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. The funds are designated as general support to further PTRF’s mission and to support its programs.

PTRF, now in its 25th year, exists to protect and improve the environmental quality of the Tar-Pamlico River, its watershed and estuarine areas through programs of education, advocacy and research.

According to a press release, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, established in 1936, is a memorial to the youngest son of the founder of R.J. Reynolds Trust. Z. Smith Reynolds’ brother and two sisters — R.J. Reynolds Jr., Mary Reynolds Babcock and Nancy Susan Reynolds Bagley — provided that their inheritance from his estate would go to the establishment of a trust for the benefit of the people of North Carolina.

One of the initial trustees of the foundation was Z. Smith Reynolds’ uncle, William Neal Reynolds, who at his death in 1951, created a trust that now provides a portion of the foundation’s annual income.

Since its inception, the foundation has made grants totaling more than $388 million to recipients in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, the release states. The foundation currently gives special attention to certain focus areas: community economic development, the environment, democracy and civic engagement, pre-collegiate education and social justice and equity.

The grant to PTRF requires a one-to-one match of new monies, which PTRF must raise before November 2008, the release states.

“I think a challenge grant is an excellent way to double our money,” said Mary Alsentzer, PTRF’s executive director. “I am very optimistic that PTRF members, friends, corporate sponsors and local businesses will help us reach our $20,000 challenge, beginning with the PTRF holiday-giving appeal. As people begin to understand that the future of the economy in this region is dependent on a healthy ecosystem and clean water, they realize just how important PTRF is. Supporting PTRF financially makes good business sense. It provides us with a sure means of investing in our children’s future.”
