Wilson comes up huge for Pirates

C.J. Wilson had arguably the best game of his young career for the East Carolina Pirates in Saturday’s 37-35 win over the Houston Cougars.
Wilson finished with nine tackles, including a career-high 2.5 quarterback sacks, and a blocked field goal. The sacks accounted for 18 yards in loss.
For the season, Wilson, a former standout at Northside High School, has 19 tackles, including a team-high four sacks, one forced fumble and one blocked field goal.
The Pirates (2-3, 1-1 C-USA) play host to UCF at 7:30 p.m. next Saturday.
HAYWOOD, WHITNEY, RODGERS
Bryan Haywood ran for 120 yards and a touchdown on eight carries in helping to lead North Carolina Wesleyan to a 50-21 win over Maryville College on Saturday.
He scored on a 6-yard run and also had a 78-yard run on the day. Haywood also had three kickoff returns for 50 yards, including a long of 27 yards.
For the year, Haywood has 38 carries for 317 yards and three touchdowns, seven receptions for 47 yards and eight kickoff returns for 141 yards (17.6 average).
Bishop teammate Davelle Whitney, a former teammate of Haywood’s at Southside High School, had a team-high eight tackles, including a quarterback sack. Whitney has a total of 15.5 tackles, an interception and a sack on the year.
Nigel Rodgers, a former standout at Washington High School and the starting free safety for the Bishops, has six tackles and one fumble recovery this season.
The Bishops (3-2, 2-0 USA South) are off next Saturday and return to action Oct. 13 in a 1 p.m. game at Averett University.
GODDARD, MOORE
Trimane Goddard, a strong safety for the North Carolina Tar Heels, had two tackles, including a sack, in played in Saturday’s 17-10 loss to No. 17 Virginia Tech.
For the season, Goddard, a former standout at Roanoke High School, has 19 tackles, one interception, one sack and one forced fumble.
Former Washington High School standout Jock Moore, a fullback, did not participate in the game.
The Heels (1-4, 0-2 ACC) play host to Miami (Fla.) at noon next Saturday.
PALMER
Greg Palmer had a quarterback sack among his four tackles in Saturday’s 26-20 loss to UNC-Pembroke. The first sack of Palmer’s career went for a 4-yard loss.
For the season, Palmer, a former standout at Northside High School, has 11 tackles, one sack, one pass deflection and one quarterback hurry.
The Hawks (1-5) are off next Saturday and return to action Oct. 13 in a 7 p.m. game at Coastal Carolina University.
CLEMMONS
Jamaine Clemmons, a defensive lineman for the N.C. State Wolfpack, didn’t play in Saturday’s 29-10 loss to Louisville.
Clemmons, a former standout at Williamston High School, is out “indefinitely” with an ankle injury.
The Wolfpack (1-3, 0-2 ACC) plays at Florida State at 3:30 p.m. next Saturday.
LAWRENCE
Gerald Lawrence, a linebacker and former standout at Washington High School, did not play for Elizabeth City in Saturday’s 12-9 overtime win over Virginia State.
The Vikings (1-4, 1-1 CIAA) play at Fayetteville State at 6 p.m. next Saturday.
ROACH
Brad Roach threw for one score and ran for another to lead the No. 14 Catawba Indians to a 45-21 victory over the No. 23 Mars Hill Lions on Thursday.
Roach, a former standout at Williamston High School, hit 17-of-23 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 18 yards and another score on five carries.
For the season, Roach is 62-of-98 (63.2 percent) for 988 yards. He’s thrown eight touchdowns and five interceptions.
On the ground, Roach has run for 64 yards and three scores on 15 carries.
Roach and the Indians (5-0, 1-0 South Atlantic) play host to Newberry College next Saturday.
VALENTI
Gina Valenti placed eighth overall in Saturday’s Citadel Invitational.
The Lees-McRae sophomore, a former standout at Washington High School, was clocked in 20 minutes, 4.51 seconds. Valenti, who was the fourth Bobcat to cross the finish line, helped her team win the tournament among the non-Division I schools.
There were 89 total runners in the event.
The Bobcats host the Green & Gold Invitational on Saturday.
