Holtz lets players enjoy Thanksgiving

GREENVILLE — With several East Carolina football players hailing from North Carolina, they’ll get the chance to go home to bond with their family this Thanksgiving.

The Pirates will get Thursday off before returning to Greenville for a crucial practice on Friday leading up to Saturday’s regular season finale against the Tulane Green Wave.

ECU (6-5, 5-2) and Tulane (4-7, 3-4) will play at 1 p.m. at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

“We are going to give them the day off,” ECU coach Skip Holtz said. “The first year I was here, we kept them in Greenville but, since we have so many players from North Carolina, I think we can get done what we have to and give them the opportunity to go home.”

After having meetings Monday and practicing Tuesday and Wednesday, the Pirates will enjoy a day off on Thanksgiving. ECU will hold an intense practice the day before the game.

“We will bring them back Friday morning and practice pretty extensively, just like a normal Thursday,” Holtz said. “It is the same schedule we incorporated last year against N.C. State.”

That seemed to work last year as the Pirates defeated the Wolfpack 21-16 in Raleigh.

Holtz said the majority of players told him they wanted the chance to be with family for the holiday.

“It would be nice to have them all here together, but a number of them expressed the desire to go home, especially those that live only an hour away,” Holtz said. “A lot of the players that live further away will just jump in the cars with the other guys so that everyone has the opportunity to have a family Thanksgiving.”
