The Plymouth Town Council went into closed session Thursday night to conduct two interviews for the town manager position. Plymouth Mayor Brian Roth said no decision was made concerning the candidates.
“We interviewed two people (and) I think we have nine or 10 resumes,” Roth said Friday. “We’ll probably be getting more in.”
Roth would not release details about the applicants in order to “respect their privacy.”
“We’re looking for a town manager that will be a good fit for our community,” he said.
Commissioner Mary Ann Byers said the right person must be committed. “It’s a 24/7 job. They must have a passion for our community, and hopefully would fall in love with our community just like I have.”
Byers said a positive attitude and experience are important. “The person would have to bring a lot to the table to help us with our businesses, buildings. Someone with foresight. They are going to have to wear a lot of hats ... and deal with a lot of juggling, and be able to respond to a number of things.”
The town’s previous manager, James Tripp, was voted out of the position in late August 2006 by a 3-2 vote by the council. Sam Styons is the financial advisor for the town of Plymouth, and when Tripp left his position, Styons took over as interim town manager. The council started initial interviews for the position in January, but put the search on hold.
“We talked Sam into staying for the budget process,” Roth said. “A few months ago, Sam came to us and asked us to wrap it up by the end of the year.”
Styons hopes to leave the position by Dec. 31.
“He indicated he wants to do other things and so we’re back looking for a town manager,” Roth said.
The hope is that a new town manager will be found before Styons leaves or at the latest by January, Roth said.
“We would like to try to avoid gapping it if we can,” he said.
