The Turnage Theater Foundation recently released its 2008 winter/spring events calendar which includes a film tribute to Washingtonian and Hollywood icon Cecil B. DeMille.
The calendar also has live performances scheduled to appeal to a broad range of people. In all, 21 different types of events are slated for production.
“What we are doing at the moment is announcing those events the Turnage is presenting, events that will appeal to everyone,” Robert Chumbley, executive director of the Turnage Theater Foundation, said in a Friday interview. “There will be other events in the theater that are produced and presented by others such as the Beaufort County Arts Council and groups like Pamlico Playhouse.”
Kicking off the 2008 schedule is the first of three chamber music performances, the Four Season Chamber Music Festival. The event, an evening of passion and elegance, is scheduled for 8 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008. Tickets are already on sale.
Lesley Gore follows on Jan. 12 and Neil Berg’s 100 Year of Broadway comes to town for two shows — Jan. 17 and 18. Janis Ian rounds out the month on Jan 25.
February features “BREAK!! The Urban Funk Spectacular” to begin the month. Its showings will be films on Feb. 3 and 4.
“As we begin to show films in the Turnage Theater again for the first time in awhile, we thought it would be appropriate to honor an artist who grew up in Washington,” Chumbley said noting the opening of DeMille’s “The Greatest Show on Earth.” Also showing will be “Reap the Wild Wind” and “The Ten Commandments.”
“We picked three famous films this month to honor DeMille and the Turnage,” Chumbley said. “In February we also will honor Black History Month with cultural heritage and dance.”
Chumbley reflected on the Turnage operations since it opened.
“There really is a little something for everyone — jazz, Broadway, pop, films — a great eclectic mix of every kind of music,” he said.
A second film festival “Epics in Times of War” runs May 9-11.
Chumbley announced four package sales, which offer buyers a chance to purchase multiple shows at a discount, adding that early purchases will help those trying to acquire grouped seating.
Package 4 - is a 20 percent discount on any four of the following shows: Glenn Miller Orchestra, Saw Doctors, Justin David, Gizmo Guys, Richie Havens, Bearfoot, Ginny Owens, Janis Ian, Leslie Gore or African Footprint.
Broadway At The Turnage - includes all three Broadway musicals at a 20 percent discount.
Classical Turnage - is a selection of any three of the five concerts for 15 percent savings or all five at 20 percent off.
Film Fests — buy all three films in each festival for $18.
