GREENVILLE — Despite running around for over two hours in the cold, Gerald Lawrence was all smiles when he walked off the field Friday evening at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.

The former Washington Pam Pack star is looking to make a name for himself with the East Carolina Pirates. Lawrence, a transfer from Elizabeth City State University, was pleased with his first official practice as a member of the Pirates.

“It went pretty good,” said Lawrence, who is wearing No. 22 during spring practice. “It’s a real learning experience.

“There’s a lot of techniques we worked on and we went over certain drills. I’m just trying to learn all the drills.”

The 6-0, 240-pound linebacker has hopes of making the two-deep depth chart by the time spring drills end.

Spring practice culminates with the annual Purple-Gold Game, which will be held April 12 at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

“I’m really looking forward to that,” Lawrence said. “It’s right around the corner. I’m preparing for it as best I can.”

The Pirates have 13 more practices to go, including scrimmages on March 28 and April 4, before the spring game.

Lawrence said he’ll see some guidance from veterans, including former Northside standout C.J. Wilson, a defensive end, over the next couple weeks.

“We’re both on the same side of the ball,” Lawrence said. “I can go to him for some advice.”

ECU, winners of the Hawaii Bowl, will open the season Aug. 30 against Virginia Tech at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Lawrence is already looking forward to playing in the home of the Carolina Panthers.

“That’s going to be a big game,” Lawrence said. “It’s going to be a good feeling playing in an NFL stadium. I’m really looking forward to that.”

Lawrence and the Pirates return to practice Monday. The team will practice in pads for the first time on Wednesday.
