Roach, cut by Ravens, waiting for his next call

Brad Roach is down, but not out.

The former star with the Williamston Tigers and Catawba Indians, where he earned All-America honors following his senior season, was released by the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday.

The 6-6, 250-pound free-agent quarterback was the odd man out as the Ravens chose to keep three quarterbacks for now — 2008 first-round pick Joe Flacco, veteran Kyle Boller and Troy Smith.

“I checked into camp on Monday (at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD),” Roach said. “We were supposed to have two practices (Tuesday). I was out the door and heading for breakfast when somebody came and got me.

“They told me to go to the office and bring my playbook. I knew right then what it was about.”

Roach said the coaches told him it basically came down to a numbers-game, but that didn’t soften the blow.

“Right when I found out, my heart sank,” Roach said. “It was pretty emotional.”

Roach, who completed 608 of 1,099 passes (55.3 percent) for 7,874 yards and 62 touchdown passes in his college career, was hoping to land a roster spot with the Ravens. However, injuries forced Baltimore to go in a different direction.

“The head coach (John Harbaugh) said there was nothing I did to make them cut me,” Roach said.

“They had to make some changes because of injuries.”

Roach is back home in Washington and is awaiting a phone call from his agent, who is working the phones to find Roach another team.

“The head coach said that some teams had called asking about me,” Roach said. “My agent will be on the phone with some teams. I’m just looking to go to which ever team wants me.”

Roach won’t be sitting around waiting for a call.

“I’m going to keep working out,” Roach said. “I’m just going to hope for the best.”

With teams opening up camp this week, Roach is hoping to land with a new team as quickly as possible.

“The earlier, the better,” Roach said. “Any time would be a good time.”

Despite being cut, Roach didn’t hold any ill feelings against the team that took a chance on him.

“I just have to thank the Ravens for giving me the opportunity,” he said.

Roach may be hurting a bit inside, but he hasn’t any confidence.

“I definitely believe I can play at the next level,” Roach said. “I hope the second chance around that I can do a lot better.

“This is just going to make me grind harder. I just want a shot at another team so I can maybe prove some people wrong.”
