Bullets try to replace Bell
By BRIAN HAINES, Sports Writer
JAMESVILLE — Bullets’ head coach Richie Ange is looking to build on last year’s Tideland Conference championship team, but knows that will not be easy.
While it is always difficult to repeat as conference kings, it is even harder when you lose to graduation your quarterback, who happened to be the Tideland Conference Player of the Year.
“We lost the player of the year in our conference, Regis Bell,” Ange said. “It kind of leaves us with a big hole at quarterback, a really big hole. That’s going to be a key spot.”
Ange, whose Jamesville squad went 8-3 last year, said he has some players who are capable of playing QB, but it is hard to find someone to fill the spot that then becomes vacated by the move.
“We have couple of guys who can fill in and can field the spot,” Ange said. “But they are other starters, and if we move them in (at QB) then we have to fill in the position that they leave.”
Ange said the early choice for first-team QB is Justin Barr.
“If we had to start tomorrow, he would be the quarterback,” Ange said. “But we are also looking at Japaul Whitehurst.”
Good thing for the Bullets is that they won’t start tomorrow; in fact, Jamesville won’t be playing football that counts until Sept. 12 when it hosts Mattamuskeet.
Because of the merger hold up, which intends to splice Bear Grass with Roanoke, and Jamesville with Williamston, the Bullets were left with a few holes in their schedule and have byes the first three weeks of the season, and another one on Oct. 10.
Ange said he tried to plan for the merger taking place, but when it didn’t, it was hard to get back some of the previously scheduled games.
The Bullets’ coach can only concern himself with things he has control over, and right now that is games that his team is scheduled to play.
Returning to Jamesville are eight starters from last year’s team, and Ange said he likes his current crop of seniors.
“We have a good senior group,” Ange said. “We have an awful lot of experience coming back. But we have to be ready to go; we can’t just think we are going to show up and win.”
