Pack soccer falls at home; volleyball team loses too

Alex Thalman’s hustle paid off.
The Washington Pam Pack junior raced toward the ball as it rolled toward Edenton’s goal. With an Edenton player in heavy pursuit, Thalman beat him to the ball.
Thalman got a good foot on the ball and sent it spiraling toward the net. Edenton’s goalie took a couple steps forward and then realized that the ball was going over his head. He wasn’t able to get back in time as the ball sailed into the net for a goal, coming just before halftime.
“It was a good goal,” Washington coach Jimmy Kozuch said. “He hustled and didn’t quit (on the play). Just because he didn’t quit, he scored.”
The goal, coming Wednesday at J.G. “Choppy” Wagner Stadium, proved to be the lone highlight for Washington in a 2-1 loss to the Aces.
Despite the setback, Kozuch was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We played a little bit better,” Kozuch said. “Our possession was much better than it was Monday against North Pitt.
“We still need to work on our offense. We haven’t had much time to work on our offense.”
Meanwhile, Edenton coach Robert Witzigman wasn’t pleased at all with his team’s effort.
“We played flat; horrible,” Witzigman said. “We didn’t play that good at all.
“We didn’t come out motivated. We just came out here expecting that they were going to win it.”
The Aces were able to jump on the Pack early as Micah Simonsen found a wide open net from the right corner.
John Marshall Howard tried to tie the game for Washington as his shot from 25 yards out, one of the few first-half shot attempts the Pam Pack got off, was easily stopped.
Thalman’s goal, his first of the season, knotted the game at 1-1 with just under a minute to play in the first half.
Edenton recaptured the lead with a goal early in the second half. T.J. Snell had a nifty header off a throw-in, his second goal in as many games by that nature.
The Pack had a few late chances at tying the game. Thalman beat three defenders to the ball, but his shot was high and wide of the net.
Washington was unable to capitalize off a free kick, while another shot by Thalman a short time later went into the side of the net.
Washington’s last chance also came up empty as Howard’s blast was stopped by the Ace goalie.
Pack junior Stephen Worsley finished the game with eight saves.
Washington plays its first road game of the season Monday at Williamston.
“I’m expecting the guys to work hard and to bury a couple more goals,” Kozuch said. “Hopefully, we’ll play strong defensively.”

Pam Pack volleyballers lose for third consecutive day

Pam Pack coach Tara Hunter has been looking forward to today for a few weeks now.
Today, the first-year Pam Pack coach will get to hold the first official practice with her team.
After a week of tryouts, followed hy three straight games to start the season, Hunter has a lot of things she’d like to work on with her young team.
On Wednesday, the Pam Pack dropped its third contest to start the season, as it fell to Farmville Central in straight sets, 25-16, 25-11, 25-7.
It was the third night in a row that Washington was swept by its opponent.
“We have a long list of things that we have to work on,” Hunter said. “I see definite improvement from our first game to tonight. With hard work and determination, we are going to be able to improve a lot.”
The Pam Pack gave the Jaguars a tussle in game one as Haley Hiatt and Sierra Weatherington came up with a couple kills apiece, but in the end, the Jaguars pulled away to take game one.
In both the second and third games, Farmville Central raced out to big leads and never looked back as it went on to score its first victory of the season.
“We really don’t have a starting lineup at this point in the year because we haven’t had a chance to practice,” Hunter said. “These first three games we kind of threw everyone out there to see how they could react. Some could handle the pressure, while others were a little jittery.
“For most of our girls, these last three days were the first time they’d played varsity volleyball,” Hunter added. “We’ve got nine underclassman who had never stepped on the floor at the varsity level before Monday. Its been a learning process.”
Crystal Smith led Farmville Central with seven kills, while Logan Sutton had an excellent day setting the ball, finishing with seven assists.
The Lady Pack was led by Hiatt, who finished with five kills, while Heather Lewis had a team-best five service points.
Washington (0-3) will return to action on Monday when they host Northside. Then on Tuesday, they will square off against defending state champion D.H. Conley.
