Despite a midair collision of their planes on Saturday morning, the pilots lived to tell the story.
One was hospitalized while the other was not injured, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
“The collision happened about 9:35 a.m. (Saturday),” said Kathleen Bergen of the FAA. “I understand both pilots survived and one walked away safely. The other went to a hospital.”
According to Washington County Planning and Safety, the injured pilot was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
“It happened about three or four miles from the Plymouth airport,” Bergen said.
Washington County officials reported one plane landed in the Liverman Heights area while the other went down in the Roanoke River.
“One plane was in a tree and the other was in a river,” Bergen said.
One of the planes was a Piper PA-28 and the other was a Piper PA-32, said Bergen.
At about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Washington County Communications received a call reporting a plane crash in the Liverman Heights area and about 10 minutes later, another caller informed officials that a second plane crash had occurred over the Roanoke River near the Plymouth waterfront.
Bergen said she did not know the identities of the pilots.
“The accident is under investigation by the FAA,” she said.
The registration number on the Piper PA-28 was N2139N and the registration number on the Piper PA-32 was N3568W, according to Bergen.
