Many volunteers made Hyde County’s first relay a great success. Plans are already being made for next year’s event.

Nine teams raised funds for the 2008 Hyde County Relay for Life.

The Hyde County Believers raised the top amount of $8,476.79 and East Carolina Bank raised $6,402.55 .

The seven other teams, with the amounts they raised in parentheses, were Dream Chasers ($5,401.50), Busy Bees ($5,033.35), Martelle’s ($3,998.50), Kids Making A Difference ($2,770), Angels of Mercy ($1,849.26), Hyde County Lakers Knocking Out Cancer ($1,682.79) and Healthy Hyde ($1,155.75).

Corporate sponsors rounded out the fundraising by accruing $2,500 for the relay.

Luminaries were sold and memorial gifts were donated to the Relay for Life.

Wendy R. Boyd, community manager with the South Atlantic Division of the American Red Cross, assisted in the effort to organize Hyde County’s first Relay for Life.

According to Mrs. Boyd, the following North Carolina organizations, with Relay for Life funds received by them in parentheses, have benefited from Relay for Life cancer research funds: University of North Carolina ($10.8 million); Duke University Medical Center ($4.7 million); Wake Forest University ($2.9 million); Bowman Gray School of Medicine ($720,000); Duke University ($296,000); Davidson College ($274,000); and Research Triangle Institute ($156,000).

In addition to these institutions, many other projects are funded by the American Cancer Society in North Carolina each year, she said.
